Quilting for a Cause: My Foster Care Donation Quilt Layout

A Quilt is a Hug

Quilting for a Cause

Quilting has always been a way to express love, and this project is no different. This year marks the fifth annual Quilt Donation Drive, which is dedicated to donating quilts to Comfort Cases, a nonprofit that provides backpacks filled with essentials—and love—to children entering the foster care system across the U.S. You can read more about the incitive and how to contribute by our host Stacey Lee of Stacey Lee Creative . This quilt, among many other heart felt donations, will be gifted to a child in forster care, offering warmth, comfort, and a tangible reminder that they are cared for.

The Quilt Block Layout

For this quilt, I’m using my heart appliqué block from a previous tutorial, arranging them in a simple 4 x 4 block grid. The only change you need to make is that for the background you will want to use a 10 1/2 by 10 1/2 inch block.

Each heart represents the love and resilience within the foster care community, and the surrounding fabrics help bring the design together into a cohesive, cozy quilt.

This quilt can be made in as little as 3 fabrics!

If you wish, you can even make a scrappy version using fun kid prints or a 10 x 10 pack! Use this Coloring Page to help you decide on which coloration is right for you.

The finished quilt will be 40 in by 40 in, making it slightly larger than a baby quilt. It is the perfect size for a small child in foster care to snuggle with and call their own.

Why Donation Quilts Matter

A quilt is more than just fabric and thread—it’s a symbol of care, hope, and belonging. Every stitch in this quilt carries a message of support for the children in the foster care system, reminding them that they are valued and loved.

I’m honored to take part in this effort, and I encourage other quilters to join in! If you’d like to participate, visit Stacey Lee Creative to learn more about how you can contribute. You can also use my heart appliqué block tutorial to create your own heartfelt donation quilt.

Together, we can make a difference—one stitch at a time.
