Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness with #SewPink: The Rose Moon Sewing Collaboration

The Rose Moon & The Courtside Bag pattern combo for #Sewpink

October is the Start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I'm honored to be taking part in ByAnnie's #SewPink Initiative this year.

I chose the Courtside bag for this project because it's a great size for taking along a small quilt or other needed goods to Chemotheapy treatments. The Courside bag also presented several large open spaces that allow for all sorts of personal customizations like the applique design I have for you today.

The Rose Moon Applique design

After some soul searching I settled on utilizing delicate roses with the beauty of a crescent moon for my applique design. Crescent moons can represent many different things in different cultures and religions. For this project I honned in on the aspect of womanhood & change the moon can bring. The Crescent moon can also mean empowerment, and in many cultures the moon as a whole is represented by a woman. In Chinese philosphy the female moon is the balance to the male sun, bringing yin & yang into balance. Even a crescent moon on it's back (such as the golden dangle in this pattern) can represent a vessel that is ready to be filled.

Roses on the other hand are see as delicate flowers, a universal symbol of gentleness and love- However, roses can also be strong and protective with their sharp thorns. Pairing the crescent moon with the rose, I felt an empowered love radiate from this design.

My hope when you create The Rose Moon, be it for yourself or for a loved one, is that you feel the love embued in this applique.

The Rose Moon is now available on the AQD store for a special limited time price in honor of Breast Cancer awareness month.

*All proceeds during the month of October from The Rose Moon will go to the American Cancer Society chapter of Colorado

Fabric Requirements for the Rose Moon Applique Pattern by Art Quilts by Design for the #SewPink event

Prepare your workspace

Sondrasa's favorite tools for applique

My go to tools:

  • 3 pairs of scissors

    • paper

    • fabric

    • applique

  • Light Box

  • Marking Pens

  • Fusible Webbing

    • such as Heat n Bond lite

  • Iron

    • I prefer my smart Oliso iron, but any clean + hot iron will do

  • Silicone Mat

    • Gypsy Quilter mat pictured

Assemble the Applique Layout Guide

  • Make sure when printing PDFS (both Applique Layout Guide and the pattern with the applique shapes) that you set your printer to "Actual Size"

  • check the 1 in box or 1 cm box against a ruler to check that everything printed to scale

  • cut along one line on only 1 page of the applique layout guide

  • align the diamond <1> on each page

  • tape pages in place to form complete applique layout guide

Prepare your background fabric-

1.      Iron and prep your fabric

2.      Cut your fabric to measurements specified in fabric requirement charts                      (you will trim to size at the end)

3.     Set aside until ready to apply applique shapes

Fabric Tip-

When pairing applique with other projects such as the ByAnnie Courtside bag, make sure to put your fabric pull for your bag next to your fabric pull for your applique project. Being able to harmonize your colors when pairing prints with solids and batiks will help your project feel cohesive.

Bold Prints pair well with batiks because we tried to keep the fabrics in the same color families

Applique Instructions

* All applique shapes have been already reversed for ease

1.      Trace the included applique shapes onto fusible webbing using a Sharpie pen & light box

2.      Cut traced shapes, leaving ¼" of paper bordering the shape

make sure to only use your paper scissors here

3.  With WS of fabric up, iron traced shapes to corresponding fabrics, according to the

instructions found on your specific fusible webbing

4.     Cut fused shapes out along the traced line

Applique Tip-

Decide where you want to cut on your line and be consistent! For example- If you cut along the outside of the line, cut ALL shapes along the outside of that line.

This will help all of your shapes be the same proportion to each other and allow the overall applique image to fit together as intended

5.     Using a heat proof, clear silicone mat that is laid over the Applique Layout Guide:

a.     Peel paper backing from shapes

b.     Place them on mat according to Applique Layout Guide and place in

corresponding spot

c.     Iron very briefly, just to adhere shapes together (2-3 seconds) and let cool

completely

Applique Tip-

  • Take your time!

  • Work in smaller sections

  • combine smaller sections to

    form larger units

6.     Peel pressed fabric gently off of the silicone mat (do not worry if some pieces do not

stay together, you can replace them before final iron)

7.      Lay form over background fabric, using Applique Layout Guide

8.     Press a clean iron over shapes according to fusible webbing’s specific instructions

9.     Sew fabric down using your preferred method

I recommend a satin or zig zag If you're going to use The Rose Moon in a Bag like

ByAnnies Courtside bag. It will allow you to wash the bag if it gets dirty without the raw edges fraying

  1. Once you have your Rose Moon securely stitched down, you can now trim your block down to either the measurements require in Courtside's instructions (Rose Moon will be the large A1 front pocket section) or trim it to 9 in x 13 in to be quilt and bond as a wall hanging art quilt

And there you have it, The Rose Moon is now ready to be used in creating your Courtside bag!

Applique is a great way to add expression to all sorts of things. Next time you have a jacket or pillow that needs spruced up, give it the applique treatmeant and see where it takes you!
